A Dutch company has deployed a new prototype in the hope that the technology will effectively eradicate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is hoped that this 100-metre-long barrier known as the Ocean Cleanup system can catch and concentrate debris in the water.
The company stated that, “Instead of going after the plastic, we propose to deploy a very long array of floating barriers, which are attached to the sea bed, and will allow the natural ocean currents to do the hard work for us.”
The company hopes that once the technology is proven, they should be able to cut the overall costs of clean-ups. Also, by selling this collected ocean plastic to other companies to make into new products, they hope to even turn a profit.
